In order to learn about natural light let us first appreciate the varying qualities of day light and the way it behaves under different circumstances. The best way to do this is to find your self a beautiful landscape and spend a good few hours watching how the changing light affects the landscape. I suggest doing this as often as you can in the beginning. Even if you don’t learn much about light it’s very relaxing and terribly good fodder for the creative soul. In all seriousness this was one of the first lessons I learnt about understanding light and that was to watch it, take time to study its unique qualities, this I learnt when assisting a landscape photographer. He always spent the first day on a new assignment just watching the light at a new location he never even got a camera out, other that a quick Polaroid of the landscape to consider compositional attributes later on in the local over a glass of wine or beer, more soul food!
